In partnership with the UCLA Department of Italian, the UCLA Department of Film, Television and Digital Media, the Skoll Center hosted this event in order to create a platform for discussing the recent changes that have occurred in European conservative politics. Various filmmakers, writers, and scholars gathered to discuss topics such as populism, national retrenchment, and anti-immigration sentiment in order to gauge Italy’s role in the changing geopolitical climate. This symposium highlighted recent literary and cinematic representations of non-Western migration in the hopes of portraying Italy as a intercultural and transnational space.
