Italy and the Geopolitics of Migration

At the intersection of entertainment and academia lies Italy and the Geopolitics of Migration, a day-long symposium co-hosted by the UCLA Department of Italian and UCLA Department of Film, Television and Digital Media that studied and discussed the issue of African immigrants in Italy through film and literature.

In partnership with the UCLA Department of Italian, the UCLA Department of Film, Television and Digital Media, the Skoll Center hosted this event in order to create a platform for discussing the recent changes that have occurred in European conservative politics. Various filmmakers, writers, and scholars gathered to discuss topics such as populism, national retrenchment, and anti-immigration sentiment in order to gauge Italy’s role in the changing geopolitical climate. This symposium highlighted recent literary and cinematic representations of non-Western migration in the hopes of portraying Italy as a intercultural and transnational space.
